Oakland, CA
At first glance, the existing, tilt-up concrete industrial building was not an obvious choice for this K-12 charter school, but the design team saw the potential to reshape the nearly windowless building into a dynamic learning environment. Enclosed classroom structures and open community spaces are organized around central landscaped courtyards in each wing. They draw light deep into the building and their transparency allows views throughout, establishing a sense of connection within the school and a relationship with the natural environment.
