SENGKANG STATION

Establishing a distinctive image for Singapore’s transportation system

“High profile and highly functional, Sengkang Station provides a convenient multi-modal transit center for a growing urban district. It serves as both an anchor for Sengkang's development and a gateway to Singapore and the region.”

As part of Singapore's Northeast Line Expansion, Sengkang Station has a distinct urban character defined by its location at the juncture of a master-planned district that includes a mixed-use development, a bus depot, a taxi station, the regional light rail system, and the MRT subway. Simplicity of form and clarity of organization facilitate the movement of passengers between the various functions of the station the transit system and the adjacent office and residential development.

Visual connections to the sun and sky are reinforced throughout all levels of the project. A sweeping canopy shields the roof-level platforms of the light rail system, while large expanses of glass allow light to flow down to the mezzanine and subway platforms. The ovalyn shape of the station envelope eliminates corners, and encourages pedestrian flows into and out of as well as around the station environment. Entrances and pedestrian bridges, covered with a Teflon-coated fabric, provide visibility and protection from the sun and the brief tropical showers.
