Bridgehampton, NY
A steep site with significant zoning constraints created challenges as well as opportunities in the design of this house located on a bluff overlooking the dunes and the ocean beyond. An unassuming, single story volume on the street side with a low sloping shed roof, follows the contour of the site and opens up to two stories with a pool and duneside patio below. A simple, efficient plan maximizes functionality and provides privacy as well as variety of spaces to congregate. White oak flooring, anodized aluminum doors and windows, precast concrete pavers and weathered wood siding were chosen for their low maintenance characteristics, cost and ability to co-exist indoors and out. Geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels, a full length trellis on the south side, efficient glazing, and spray cell insulation keep the structure comfortable year round and minimizes energy consumption.
