Big Bang School is located in a rural area of Chalkidiki peninsula, on a slopping 18.752 sq.m. site with a view to the Thermaic Gulf. The main intention of the project was the integration of all the building elements in the rural landscape with the minimum impact on the environment. The building consists of three units (wings) of classrooms placed in three different levels, connected through semi-outdoor spaces. Each unit is a single floor space that includes four classrooms, art studio, sanitary accommodation, kitchenette and common areas for events or lunch. All the classrooms are facing south, to their adjoining courtyards, in order to derive maximum benefit from sunlight. Based on the same bioclimatic architecture principles, there is an extended use of passive and active systems such as canopies, solar shades, air conditioning appliances, solar collectors and outdoor light structures like wooden pergolas.
