TASK

The task comprised creation of the new urban district at the Baltic sea coastline, 3km away from the center of Helsinki, at the Kruuvuorenrata peninsula in the Helsinki archipelago. The significance of this complex for the spatial development of Helsinki was based on the fact that the City Planning Department of Helsinki had foretasted it as one of the future pivots of the city spatial development for the 21st century. The complex morphological structure is an elongated peninsula, of significant natural, historical and cultural values, surrounded by the water expanse from three side, on which currently there are oil tanks that are out of function. Respecting the specificity of the natural context and the position, the city center view, this location makes planning and designing of diverse types of single-family, and multi-family dwelling possible as well a numerous and versatile public spaces and activities which would enrich this residential district.
 
PRINCIPLE OF RECONSTRUCTION

As per urban plan of the city of Helsinki, three tanks will be retained at the existing location and which are subject to reconstruction and according to the design another two new buildings of the same form. 

By combination of voronoi mathematical diagram and cylindrical tank form, the voronoi 2 is created (emerges).

In mathematics, the voronoi diagram is a special kind of metric space division. The initial set of points are defined by the directions  and positions of the existing tanks at the location, and further on the set of points is formed on the basis of the tanks inter-relation and the relation to the ground level development and water. The shell enveloping the existing tank position has been formed in voronoi form.

PROGRAM

The possibility of cylindrical tank form and theme, their disposition and environment, the wish to animate and awaken the quiet ambiance if the northern regions had the effect upon program defining. In vertical tanks several groups of activities are developed: intensive activities - sports and recreation are practiced in the atmosphere of fun and the quiet zones are for relaxing and enjoyment have not been excluded.
