Nutanix - A modern office design from Space Matrix in Singapore that reflects an ecological ethos

Nutanix is a cloud computing software company that sells hyper-converged infrastructure appliances and software-defined storage. The company wanted to establish an Asian headquarters for sales team who were currently working in a serviced office. They requested from Space Matrix a corporate interior design for their new tailored and branded office to be an inviting and open workplace their team could be proud of, promote collaboration and account for their plans to grow.

With Nutanix, Space Matrix wanted to take the opportunity to ensure that a commercial building has a positive ecological impact on the surrounding site, rather than being a disruptive force. For instance, it is common knowledge that buildings account for 40% of global energy consumption. As individuals, we have great potential for compounding the impact of our carbon handprint through mindful utilisation of resources. A great example would be someone who segregates their garbage at source, reuses and recycles where possible and composts all organic material. This, in fact, gives them the opportunity to amplify the positive effects by using the nutrient-rich compost to plant trees around their house or grow their own vegetables. This is just one example — such small but efficient steps, applied across the different areas of our lives, can really add up to drive a massive global shift in attitude. Now, increasing ecological handprints is not just a matter of individual effort. Today, more and more companies are putting a sharper focus on sustainable health, safety and environmental policies. They see the merit of aligning their corporate growth strategies with UNDP’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Take Nutanix’s LEED Silver-certified, sustainability-focused office in Singapore as an example. The workspace design has been conceptualised to reduce dependence on electricity. The office interior peripheral areas make optimum use of natural light, giving employees a bright, sunlit space to work from. The workspaces near the windows all have sensors that detect how bright it is outside, and automatically adjust the level of illuminance within the office. The rooms further inside the office are lit by LED-based light fixtures — and these rooms have occupancy sensors to ensure that there is no unnecessary wastage. Products and textiles that are high in recycled materials have been chosen for the office interiors. Segregation bins and low-flow water fixtures help the workplace increase the size of their corporate handprint.

To reflect the change in corporate mindset and modern office design that reflects an ecological ethos, here are the sustainable corporate office interior design features for Nutanix that are included:

● The project utilises the existing dense infrastructure, it's walkable and connected to public transport to reduce dependency on private cars/taxis.

● Low flow water fixtures (WELS 3 TICKS) help reduce water use consumption.

Space Matrix reduced the lighting power density by using LED-based light fixtures and also by replacing the Existing Fluorescent (T5) light tubes with LED T5 tubes.

● Lighting controls, such as daylight sensors on peripheral spaces and occupancy sensors for project spaces help reduce electricity consumption.

● Energy Star equipment and appliances used to reduce electricity consumption.

● Advanced energy metering to track major end uses and provide a feedback loop for any future improvements.

● Waste segregation happens at the source by providing segregated bins to reduce recyclable waste going to landfills.

● The interior materials and finishes selection are environmentally preferred products (high recycled content and low VOC products).

● Offers healthy sunlight exposure by maximising open plan workstations towards peripheries.
