Friday, March 14, 7pm: Exhibition Discussion with designer Florencia Pita, Joseph Rosa, and SCI-Arc Director Eric Owen Moss followed by Opening Reception

LOS ANGELES, CA (February 25, 2014) –SCI-Arc is pleased to present Florencia Pita/PFmod: UMMA Table & Objects, opening March 14 in the SCI-Arc Library. Focused on Florencia Pita’s work, the installation explores the provocations and intersections of digital technology, material experimentation, and ornament in the work of the Argentina-born, Los Angeles-based architect and designer. The exhibition traces the evolution of Pita’s design ideology through installation pieces, urban design, tableware, furniture, and architecture, as well as small adornments. Her boldly colored works draw from literary, art, and biological sources, employing cutting-edge architectural fabrication techniques and crossing the borders of visual art, architecture and design.

The works on view in the SCI-Arc Library were displayed at the University of Michigan Museum of Art from January 19 to June 16, 2013, being commissioned by Museum Director Joseph Rosa for Florencia Pita’s first retrospective exhibition.

About Florencia Pita/fpmod

Florencia Pita’s firm, fpmod, is a collaborative practice with an incisive fixation on contemporaneity that thrives on the mannerist use of digital technology. As new modes of design and production are more involved with new technologies, the firm focuses on the underlying mechanisms of overlaying forms. Pita graduated from the National University of Rosario, School of Architecture in 1998. In 1999, she was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to pursue her graduate studies at Columbia University, where she received her MSAAD in 2001. In collaboration with Hernan Diaz Alonso, Pita won first prize in the 2001 Metro Design Plaza International Competition for Lexington, Kentucky. She has also been the recipient of two Graham Foundation Grant awards. Her work has been widely published in publications such as Log (she was co-editor of Log 17), Architectural Record, A+U, Surface Magazine, among others. Moreover, her work has been exhibited in numerous museums, galleries and biennials, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Artists Space, MAK Vienna, and in the 2012 Venice Biennale. Her work is also part of the permanent collection of the MAK Vienna, the Art Institute of Chicago, and other private collections.

Pita is currently full time Design Faculty at SCI-Arc, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate design studios, is as Visual Studies instructor of advanced software, and editor of the Onramp catalog of student work. She has been visiting professor at Pratt Institute in New York and Lund University, Sweden. Pita’s work experience includes the offices of Greg Lynn FORM, Eisenman Architects and Asymptote.
