The Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) is now accepting applications for its Interaction/Hardware/Software Design Fellowship program, which advances and advocates the innovative processes of design through the lens of architecture.

The SCI-Arc Robot House focuses on the generation of ideas through simulation and prototyping, engaging collaborative robotics and additive material processes. It operates as a platform for design research revolving around the following two questions: How can architects engage, break in and challenge other disciplines? How can other disciplines inform and expand what we understand to be architecture today?

The fellowship offers the ability to work in a highly collaborative and dynamic design research environment in one of the world’s leading architecture schools, providing a strong platform for personal development as well as international exposure for publications. Fellows will form part of a dynamic team working on creative design problems and will participate in existing research projects. Fellows will receive access to SCI-Arc’s Robot House as well as technical support, including training on SCI-Arc’s digital and physical robot platforms. The fellowship is fully funded and will begin on November 1, 2014 or on an alternative, agreed-upon date.

Successful candidates for the Interaction/Hardware/Software Design Fellowship should have completed a master’s degree in Architecture, Media Arts, Computer Science or Engineering with a strong focus on digital programming in design process. Demonstrated excellent programming skills and in-depth knowledge in either/or C++ and/or C# and/or Python programming environments is expected. Applicants who have experience with professional CAD and 3D modeling software packages or professional technical knowledge for the creation of real-time responsive environments and gaming are encouraged to apply. Fluent English language skills are required for this position.

A design research agenda is required for application. The agenda should comprehend what the fellow plans to achieve in research and how; a description of how the fellow plans to take advantage of the SCI-Arc Robot House’s unique platform; and how the work will expand the existing discourse. In addition to the agenda, a comprehensive CV, cover letter, diplomas, work certificates, and three letters of recommendation are required for application.

In order to be considered, applicants must electronically submit all of the required application materials listed above (PDF is recommended) to sci-arc_directors_office@sciarc.edu.

Deadline for submission of all application materials: Tuesday, Sept 30, 2014 by 11:59pm PST.
