Five teams of Clemson University School of Architecture graduate students, led by Professor Ulrike Heine, won five out of eleven prizes from the Dow Solar Design to Zero Competition.  

First prize was awarded to Eric Laine and Suzanne Steelman.

Second prize was awarded to Daniel Kim and Caitlin Ranson.

Honorable Mention was awarded to John Oxenfeld and Adam Wilson.  

The Design Integration Award went to Mike Niezer and Adrian Mora.

The Built-In Photovoltaic Design Award went to Jason Drews and James Graham.

Competing teams were challenged to design a building comprising of three connected dwellings; each of the dwellings must have active and passive solar technologies to achieve near-zero energy solutions.

Three winning entries, as determined by a peer review judging process, will receive cash prizes of $20,000, $10,000 and $5,000. In addition to the top three prizes, four honorable mentions were noted, and four subcategory prizes were awarded.  

The competition was open to individual students or student teams. There were 131 entries from 19 countries.
