The [Secret] Return of Noever, a special SCI-Arc-hosted exhibition, documents twenty-five years of Peter Noever’s curatorial adventurism as Director of the MAK (Museum of Applied Art / Contemporary Art), Vienna and founder of the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles, California as well as of the MAK Artists-and-Architects-in-Residence scholarship program in Los Angeles.

A surprise opening reception was held December 10 at the newly opened Ace Museum on La Brea in Los Angeles. The exhibition was a surprise for Peter, who showed up at the event accompanied by SCI-Arc Director Eric Owen Moss and friends. More than 300 of LA's most noted architects, designers, artists, business executives and community leaders attended the event. Special guests included Frank Gehry, Thom Mayne, Douglas Christmas, Greg Lynn, Ed Moses, among others.

The exhibition installation was designed by Alexis Rochas, founder of I/O, a Los Angeles based practice focusing on the development of dynamic architectural methodologies integrating design, technology and advanced fabrication techniques. A member of SCI-Arc's design faculty since 2003, Rochas has headed multiple projects through the Community Design Program. Since 2006, he has been coordinating the Making and Meaning program, SCI-Arc’s foundation program in Architecture. More about Alexis Rochas/I/O.

Seeking to acknowledge Peter Noever’s unique contribution to the architecture discourse, SCI-Arc organized this exhibition in recognition both of the unprecedented interrogatories in art and architecture sponsored by Peter during his time at the MAK, and in anticipation of the "return of Noever" now in the offing. Los Angeles, we’re convinced, is a particularly poignant location for such recognition, because of Peter’s long history of projects in LA, as well as his many colleagues in art and architecture who reside here.

The exhibition host committee—Douglas Chrismas, Frank Gehry, Greg Lynn, Jeffrey Kipnis, Eric Owen Moss, Thom Mayne and Wolf Prix—invited 100’s of renown and emerging international artists and architects who have exhibited with Peter at MAK Vienna, MAK Center Los Angeles, or any other international venue under Peter’s auspices to send a single digital image of their work for the exhibition and exhibition catalogue. These images will be on display along with documentary videos directed by Peter, copies of every catalogue produced during his tenure at the MAK—more than 300 displayed on 25 custom-designed tables— and a 7,000-square-foot architectural installation listing the names of every exhibition under Peter’s direction.

The exhibition runs from December 12 - 30, 2011 and will be open Monday through Friday from 1 to 5pm. Parking located in the rear.

This project is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs.
