Hub50House, designed by national architecture firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz, is a striking addition to The Hub on Causeway, a mixed-use, multi-phased residential, office, hotel, retail, and entertainment development. Capitalizing on its height and views of the Charles River and downtown Boston, the 380,000-square-foot, 38-story tower elegantly steps outward on the site’s north side to maximize the number of units with views to the city. With 440 units, Hub50House is part of the monumental Hub on Causeway development at Boston’s North Station. This development breathes new life and elevated experiences to an area that was once known simply for Irish pubs and pre-game happy hour.
Hub50House offers luxury units along with water and city views with three separate floors of amenities, including the “woof deck,” a large, elevated dog park above the retail level of the building. Other amenities include a fitness center complete with yoga/class studios, social lounges, a private event space, a coffee bar, and a business center. Residents enjoy Boston’s highest rooftop pool and sundeck with expansive views of Boston, thoughtful apartment layouts, and easy access to commuter lines to Cambridge and beyond.
Solomon Cordwell Buenz brought a national perspective and innovative design solutions to this project. While Boston construction typically is centered around steel, SCB knew through their work across the country that concrete, although more expensive, would decrease construction time and therefore reduce the total cost. SCB also wanted to differentiate the residential tower from the larger project, so the tower cantilevers over the retail base, offering a visual break between the two masses. The design utilizes two different shades of glass to visually break up the mass of the towers, as well as to highlight the social and community amenities seen throughout the building. Again, to demarcate the transition between retail and residential at the ground level, the materiality changes from brick and steel to wood and glass. The entry tower is positioned along a pedestrian thoroughfare to the west of The Hub, providing a unique identity for the residential tower. A natural wood canopy denotes the residential entry, creating a more intimate lobby. This forward-thinking design approach allowed SCB to deliver a spectacular building within a major redevelopment of the Hub on Causeway near and around TD Garden, helping revitalize this beloved Boston area.
