5th Street Kitchen

The existing kitchen of this duplex in NW
DC was isolated from the rest of the house,
and for the young family with two children,
this layout made it difficult for everyone to
interact in the way they wanted to. Because
of all the separations, minimal natural light
penetrated the house. The solution was to
create a continuous and flowing space from
entry and living room to dining and kitchen.
By creating a peninsula counter that also
functions as a bar height eating surface,
the kitchen and dining room becomes one,
and a new glass door to the sunny patio
in the rear allows for ample light to filter
through all the way to the living room.
The existing powder room was converted
into a ‘showder’ room - a small bathroom
that also incorporates a shower for guests
to enjoy. Space was limited, but use of
the appropriate fixtures and pops of color
punctuated through-out the space allowed
for a fun and lively renovation.
