Santuaria Muxbal Community Center

Santuaria Muxbal is a 350-home planned community in Guatemala City. At the invitation of the master plan architect we were commissioned to design a community center for the project. The center includes swimming pools for children and adults, dance and workout rooms, squash courts and children's classrooms. Taking advantage of the benign climate, the facilities are mostly unconditioned, but covered by a large translucent roof that provides shade and rain protection.

Located on a plateau overlooking forested ravines on three sides, the community center also includes retail and spa facilities that are arranged to form a public plaza, which will be used for special events and weekend farmer’s markets.  A large existing tree has been preserved as the focus of the plaza, creating a garden entry for the community.
