One West End

One West End creates a dynamic architectural dialogue between past, present and future. The Indiana limestone base firmly asserts itself into the lineage of the Upper West Side while the crystalline glass towers above connect the building to Columbus Circle and Midtown Manhattan beyond.

The new building is a 41-story, full-block condominium tower constructed as part of Riverside Center, a 5-tower, 8-acre premier development located along the western edge of Manhattan, linking Midtown and the Upper West Side. The development features a large public green space connecting to the Hudson River Park, an extensive water fountain, space for open-air markets, restaurants, retail and a new elementary school.

The design consists of two narrow glass towers perched above a 6-story, Indiana limestone base. The scale of the tower podium is articulated by a series of landscaped setback terraces, stepping back from the tree-filled plaza to the amenity-level roof garden. It is further defined by the angled stone façade and deeply set punch-windows. This pattern is grouped vertically into a larger figure, a motif recalling the scale and rhythms of the Upper West Side’s established residential neighborhoods. Floating above the podium, the taller of the glass towers reaches a height of 500 feet while the shorter tower cantilevers 50 feet beyond the podium and 70 feet above West End Avenue. Within the first floor of the cantilever is the residence’s amenity-level lap pool. The massive scale of the glass towers is moderated and softened through the clustering of groups of floors into smaller
‘neighborhoods’. The number of floors in each neighborhood increases as they go up the tower.

These neighborhoods are further refined, like the podium below, by subtle facets but in glass and linen-finished stainless steel. The alternating pattern of these facets create a dramatic tapestry of changing reflections and subtle light highlights the building offers 246 market rate condominiums and 166 affordable housing rental units. The ground level will be predominantly culinary focused retail with commercial space occupying much of levels 2 through 5. Residential amenities will include a 12,000 sf rooftop garden terrace; fitness center with lap pool; dining and entertainment community rooms; children’s playroom and a high-tech lounge.
