Valais represents one of the largest residential villa developments in Hong Kong SAR, located close to the border with China at Sheung Shui in a rural area of natural beauty. It has been built to cater for a mixed market of purchasers, ranging from second home buyers from Hong Kong looking to for a less formal summer retreat, buyers from mainland China and those that travel frequently across the Hong Kong and China border for work.

Situated on a 158 square kilometer site and bordering the Beas River to the south, the challenge lay in creating a high quality environment encompassing 330 villas of 16 types in a phased development that would operate seamlessly in consecutive phases and maintain harmony with the natural environment. The development phasing and marketing plan focused around a central clubhouse for Valais, with an associated sales village area that needed most villa types within close range.

The resulting phasing of site 1 with smaller houses from 150 square meters, and site 2 with larger houses up to king sized double villas in excess of 500 square meters, led to the creation of two clubhouses. Both clubhouses are designed around a sunken courtyard garden space, with a series of framed views both inward and outward to green spaces, and service their local “village” sites with food and beverage, sports and leisure facilities. The clubhouse for site 2, encompassing the larger residences is more generous at 2,800 square meters with double height lounge spaces, vertical green wall and a 50 meters outdoor pool.
