Working in the penthouse of a seventies-era building in midtown presented both obstacles and advantages. Limited ceiling height and lack of flexibility inherent in the building were offset by expansive windows, unique views, and high natural light levels. The floor plan was opened up to take advantage of the views, while a light material palette emphasized the airiness of the space. Conceived of as one complete piece of millwork, variations on ash — rift-sawn, bleached, blackened, and oiled — play against one another, with accents of blackened steel, glass, and volcanic stone.
