Following the brief from the Competition architectural guidlines, the project had to be realistic and not a simple composition exercise. But unfortunatly the jury went in an other direction, and the result of the choice of the jury is a very complicated building to do, especially with the local resources (..materials that require a production process with a low environmental impact and low energy requirements should be used..), something required in the brief. My project is a realistic way to meet the goal, something that many "architects" forgot.
Bamiyan CULTURAL CENTER DESIGN CONCEPT.
THE choice to design THE BAMIYAN cultural center is due to the great importance of THIS archeological site IN Afghanistan. WE CHOSE to DESIGN not a single building, but a real "citadel" of culture. The SINGLE buildings that make up the complex are distinct, have the functions required by the BUILDING PROGRAM and they are all connected by walkways also covered. The new Cultural Centre consists of "empty SPACES" and "full SPACES" that ARE alternateD in their destinations, making it possible to exploit all the available space. It HAS been given great importance to the open spaces of the ARCHITECTURAL GUIDELINES dedicated to the community (front of the CLASSROOMS AND MUSIC PERFORMANCE ROOM) because we believe this is an important factor of integration and life of the center itself with the LOCAL community.
GREAT CONCERN HAS been given to the energy and environmental sustainability of the Cultural Center, as we chose a sustainable technology not too complex (also in the future management) but effective in the results and DURABILITY in FUTURE time. THE Same TYPE OF choice HAS BEEN made for the structure, using materials provided on SITE AND A TYPE OF technology not too complex for the FINAL construction, which can be safely applied to LOCAL resources.
THE design of the center is highly innovative both structurally and visually, using pure geometrical elements with a traditional component to not be out PLACE.
THE Cultural Center creates a strong and vital center for the community of Bamiyan, as PREVIOUSLY described.
THE Cultural Center IS STRONGLY INTEGRATED in the visual context of the Bamiyan Valley, as its compositional elements are geometrically corrected in the relationship with the building's tradition OF THE VALLEY.
THE Cultural Centre applies an environmentally conscious design, BECAUSE IT will be used local MATERIALS AND LOCAL resources, as well as a SPECIFIC study focused on RENEWABLE energy and RESOURCES.
THE historical context of the valley is strongly connected with the center, which WILL HAS a high degree of security in order to protect his works OF ART as well as a strong permeability with the context of the World Heritage property.
