The building at 837 Fifth Avenue South is a two-story, mixed-use modern structure containing a restaurant, retail bay, and office spaces. The client requested a two-story building of limited scale to fit seamlessly between adjacent three-story and one-story structures. The restoration of an abandoned pedestrian way leading from Fifth Avenue to a parallel alley was of utmost importance, as was the creation of two buildings abutting the alley that were unique, but retained similar qualities.
To accomplish these goals, the building was separated by the alley at the 1/3 point, creating a larger and smaller building. The building’s exterior takes on an Art Deco influence from nearby homes, but differs in style from its adjoining neighbors. In a city adverse to change, it was necessary to present advanced renderings and computer visualizations to the public and city agencies in order to get project approval. Today, the building fits harmoniously along the busy pedestrian corridor.
