Khumbu Climbing Center

My design experience is exemplified through my work on the Khumbu Climbing Center currently being built in Phortse, Nepal.  The KCS has been an epic design challenge through its environmental conditions in the High Himalayas, material availability and transport, and the reinforcement of the delicate architectural heritage of the Sherpa.  As a graduate studio 3 other students and I traveled to Nepal for an initial design charette.  Throughout the course of the fall semester we worked with 4 undergraduate students as a stacked studio on numerous designs, prototypes, and environmental strategies.  We presented to the best climbers in the world, the architecture community through MSU’s lecture series and created a book to document the process.  At the end of the semester 4 designs were presented to the Sherpa and the design I headed was chosen.  The spring semester involved rigorous development through the use of the innovative technology, Autodesk Ecotech, and a graduate engineering team.

Teammates include:

Chris Hancock, Justina Hohmann, Dylan McQuinn, Jaron Mickolo, Me (Sarah Mohland), Nick Molinaro, Dean Soderberg, and many more.
