LIC Cinema

A new theatre typology utlizes a double helix, one of theatres and one of support program. The theatre helix expands and offsets with each rotation, allowing for varying theatre sizes. This morphology creates interstitial spaces that accomodate additional program, including a film museum, lounges, a bar and a restaurant.  While the support helix contains circulation, a more direct route of ramps is located in the entry facade, underneath the skin that peels away from the theatres.

 

An urban forest becomes an unplanned and therefore refreshing green sanctuary in this industrial waterfront area of Queens. Surrounded by forest and a hill on its urban edges, the approach to the building becomes a theatrical experience.
