The Sankofa Plaza project is a 40,000gsf. mixed-used development in the Amasaman district of the Greater Accra region proposed for the owner of Sankofa Pharmacy Ltd. It is designed as a hybrid building with ground floor retail, two upper level apartments and a penthouse suite at the top.
The primary design challenge with this building rested entirely in the context for which it is to be built. The site is part of a larger undeveloped area without a proposed masterplan to explain the basic zoning and land use regulations. To this effect, the programmatic components of the project were governed by a few set of rules predicated on the simple notion of “Growth”. The general premise is that, this part of the Amasaman district in the past decade has transitioned from a lower to medium, and on course to achieve a high density zoning in a short period of time. This logic suggests the inevitable demand for housing and commercial services. Therefore, Sankofa Plaza strives to be a small scale commercial neighborhood development, with the intent to serve the growing community in which it belongs.
