Masquerade No More: Bridging Space, Place, and Self in the Bywater

thesis project, Spring 2011

Site Justification, Project Proposal:
The St. Claude Arts District and the Bywater neighborhood in
which it is embedded are quickly gaining prominence within the
greater metropolitan landscape. Tangible signs of rebirth are evident
in the following:
-the city’s current bid to purchase the soon-to-be vacated NSA
complex at the corner of Poland Ave. and Chartres St. for renovation
and reprogramming,
-the Port’s intended redevelopment of the Poland Ave. wharf site
as Nola’s third cruise ship terminal,
-the decision of the Reinventing the Crescent riverfront
redevelopment plan to project their proposed park to the edge of the
IHNC.
Assuming the implementation of these projects, this thesis
instrumentalizes the current built environment and activity to support
its own stories. It seeks to distract, engage, and release those who
stumble through its stage.
