This house was like an 'Extreme Home Makeover' except we had to work with the existing structure instead of tearing it down completely. The challenge was to create a third floor on an existing, 2-story, 1950's home in the Ventura Keys. The owner's wanted a modern retreat where they could also work and entertain, so we decided that a new third floor was the best solution.
The first floor was kept for the living and family areas, the second floor was reorganized for bedrooms and a new photography studio, and the new third floor was created for a lounge and entertaining space. Instead of retrofitting the existing structure to accommodate the new third floor, we isolated the new addition with a steel frame that dissected through the existing house. I helped coordinate the construction documents and the shop drawings while meticulously navigating the strict height restrictions and floor area ratios (FAR's) at the beach.
