This project was really the start of my love for integrating a building to the site. We were tasked to design a “green educational center” out on the bluffs of Montana de Oro State Park. I really felt that the most important part of this project was the site itself and my project needed to reflect that. I borrowed from the natural rock formations of the coast for inspiration in my walls. They extend out and break away as they move towards the water, mimicking the wear of the ocean on the coast. To minimise the impact of my building, I designed it to sit back down into the ground so that all you saw when looking out were these dynamic elements that mimicked the waves crashing up over the rocks. The flower like sculptures reached up out of the natural grasses to bring light down into the underground rooms and at night would be illuminated from bellow to enhance the natural vista. My drawings were all done freehand with ink and marker.
