Confluence of Adjacencies

The City of Los Angeles is currently in the process of working on two major projects that will change the face of the city: The Los Angeles River Project and the LA Metro Rail Project. Not only do these projects lay the ground work for a non-auto based connection network throughout the metropolitan region, but the combined projects are estimated to cost around $4 Billion.

The site for the LA River YMCA is located at the intersection of these two projects.  It can be thought of as a $4 Billion intersecting in the middle of Los Angeles.  But the site itself is an unpleasant and forgotten part of the city. It is surrounded by rail yards and industrial wastelands. In addition, there are very literal physical boundaries and separations between the new Metro Line and the LA River. Along the concrete river, there are walls and rail lines separating people from the interaction with the extremely polluted water way. In addition, there is a about a fifteen foot drop from the First Street Bridge where the new Orange Line has been constructed.

The concept behind this project is to use the intersection of the project to create a confluence of adjacencies with the intention of turning this site and the LA River YMCA into an active node within the city.
