We live in a contradiction. The paradox of human nature is that humanity is always a manifestation of cultural meanings, social relationships, and power politics; culture, not biology, becomes destiny. Gender is one of the largest ways in which we define ourselves and other things, giving higher value to those defined as masculine over feminine. As an interruption to the social process of gendering, the project is an experiment in a neutral solution. An architecturally ambiguous environment that is a creation of the residents merged with the existing pulse of the larger city system: artist commune and elevated path from the Transbay Terminal to Market Street. A socially dynamic machine that is neither male nor female, inside or out, artificial or natural.
