Five, modest sized (600 SF each), detached cottages replaced the same number of units built in the 20's to house laborers working in the railroad tracks.
This replacement in kind was possible by a city ordinance, exempting the project from other applicable zoning ordinances, if the replacement cottages did not exceed the overall height and area of the original buildings. As a result, instead of the typical two story duplex allowed by current code, the owner was allowed to re-built the original five units. the cottages sits at the edge of the cliff, with just the railroad tracks between them and the coast.
The project was awarded an Orchid award for Historic Preservation by the San Diego Chapter of the AIA in 2003
