The O2 project involves the addition of a 35-story tower to an existing building that houses the Apple R&D center in Israel, totaling 423,550 sq ft in area. The new structure features a primary concrete core and cantilevered steel masses that hover above the existing complex, enabling the expansion of floor areas without adding structural load to the original building.
The design presents complex challenges, including integrating the new tower with the operational building without disrupting its functionality. The project requires precise coordination of systems such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection within a constrained floor area, while maintaining space efficiency. The building is designed for LEED Gold certification, incorporating energy-efficient elements like photovoltaic panels and high-performance glazing to reduce energy consumption and promote sustainability.
