Tatami House is a residential design which resulted from a semester-long independent study of residential design history across East Asia. After some weeks of pre-modern residential traditions, I did case studies of several contemporary projects across Japan, China, and Korea (see photos).
Tatami House, my own design, incorporates the 2-to-1 ratio of the traditional mat into the space plan. Seeing as many residential types across East Asia incorporate a courtyard and a geometric parti, I used three fully interior courtyards to guide the rest of the plan through three levels.
