This project consisted in re utilizing an existing prison facility which had been vacant out... basically all the inmates were transfer somewhere else. The city came up with a contest for architects to generate ideas on possible solutions for the site.
I decided to keep the existing structure but added a hall way with a series of new columns in front of it... also brought down some walls of the cells in the back of the building and replaced them with different color tinted glass...The site is one of the few steep areas on the city so I kept the elevated ground/common area as a plaza in which local artists could develop urban art ; in way like a mural but in the ground.
The elevated Plaza generated shadowed spaces where transients could rest from the hot days of the city (which are a lot) and have this element of surprise...Unfortunately the city ended up just demolishing the building and as far as I know nothing has been done to the site.
