Restructuring the real estate portfolio is an important part within the strategic vision of the University of Amsterdam. It is the aim to form three campuses, each with a different identity and focus. The innercity campus will be the seat of the College of Humantities and will house furthermore the main library annex studycentre of the university. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, part of Unesco world heritage, the plot has a rich history. Established as a convent during the middle ages the complex transformed into one of the first larger scaled hospitals in the 19th century .
The university bought most of the buildings after the hospital moved out in the late seventies and after being used for different amenities, it will now be housing the College of Humanities. Using the existing buildings proved to be an immensely important factor as the buildings have been declared monuments .
In 2013, a tender was organized based on the idea to transform the existing structure into a university library. A consortium of the two Amsterdam based architectural firms of Van Stigt & MVSA Architects won the tender. Consisting of a programme of 150,000sqft, it is one of the largest developments of the university.
