Baruch Houses and Lavanburg Homes

This project was the major focus of my time while at Nelligan White (NW). It is a part of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) campaign to repair damage from Hurricane Sandy and prepare for future storms at water-front developments. The main objective of the project is to replace the existing sunken Central Heating Plant with a elevated Steam Pressure Reduction Valve Station (PRV) to provide steam to the 18 existing midcentury residential buildings and the older Lavanburg Homes on the nearly 28 acre superblock.

A secondary objective is to construct a flood wall around the western portion of the site. The flood wall will protect 10 existing residential buildings up to a project Design Flood Elevation (DFE). The DFE is determined by the New York City Building Code Appendix G, the section of the code outlining construction in flood zones. Reference was also made to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) standard 24. The DFE was determined to be 14.5’ NAVD 88, which not only complies with the NYCBC requirements it also anticipates sea level rise to the end of this century.
