I have been in the design construction industry for 25 years.  I started at 17 years old and over the years have engaged in hands on experience with the core elements of building construction including footing & foundation work, metal and wood stud framing, roofing, and masonry.  This practical experience has  given me expertise and knowledge of exactly how buildings get marketed, design, and built and also what can be expected from the various contractors working on a job.  This  experience has also given me insight in how to produce thoughtful designs with real word constraints in mind.
