Perkins&Will, San Francisco, CA, US, Arch III, Design Technology Leader
As a design technology leader I provide guidance to the entire office for design applications and develop 3D design workflows to utilize various platforms in the most efficient and effective manner. I have also worked to set up BIM implementation plans in coordination with project contracts, and have overseen the actual BIM model as a member of the design team.
As an Arch III (and eventually Project Architect) I was involved in several projects at Perkins+Will. A defining project for me was a 70,000 SF amenities building with a fast track shared incentive contract which links the design and construction teams together with well-aligned goals. The contractor, major trade partners and consultants were all brought into the project before concept design and the entire team was collocated in job trailer on site from the design development phase through to completion. We began with the concept design phase in October of 2014, we began construction in April of 2015, finished our construction document phase in June of 2015, and we have targeted substantial completion for August 2016. I worked with the contractor and owner to develop a BIM implementation plan during concept design, and before design development worked with our IT group and the contractor to set up an automated BIM workflow utilizing various software at a shared server located at the job site. As a designer on the project I performed visioning workshops with the client and future building users to help develop the interior layout of the design. I worked closely with the project designer and many consultants/subs including the curtain wall sub contractor, which required a great deal of rationalization for a complex elliptical facade. I had the opportunity to work closely with a waterproofing consultant in order to detail the majority of the exterior portion of the building. I am also working on construction administration for the project, which provided a great challenge in the beginning of construction while we were still completing our construction documents. The project is aiming for LEED gold under the new version 4, the first project in our office to do so. I am the LEED administrator for this project and am working to coordinate all credits with various responsible parties, and document the credits for which we are responsible.
Before the that project I was coordinating the construction of a 500,000 sq ft medical facility which is to be completed in 2017. The project delivery method is a design-assist design-build approach. I have also worked on smaller tenant improvement projects, mixed-use and civic/cultural buildings.
