I'm a recent graduate of BArch program at City College of New York, Spitzer School Of Architecture. Currently I'm working in a well known, NYC based, lighting design firm as a junior lighting designer. It is a multifaceted profession, with in depth exposure to the world of both lighting manufacturing and architecture, along with respective sub-fields. During my studies I was working in the Model Shop in the architecture school. It was a challenging, and in retrospect, necessary experience which required a careful balance of dedication to both my job duties and coursework. The most rewarding aspect was that it allowed me to have working experience with construction and fabrication tools. Outside of architecture, some of my hobbies are photography and cars. I equally enjoy a hike with a camera and working on my car. My upcoming goal is to learn how to drive stick and participate at autocross event.
However, my long term goal is to build a career that would allow for best utilization of knowledge gained in school and post grad employment, while being directly involved in the construction phase of a project. Where at any given moment you can draft a detail and then turn around to start building it directly with or without the contractor, not to submit it as an RFI, process it through paper pushers, only to have to explain it over the phone a month later. My personal belief is that this disconnect between the architects and the builders leads to longer construction periods, only to result in wasted effort and money. It would be great to see this boundary thin or entirely disappear.
