Julián Uribe (b. 1986, Colombia) is an architect from Colombia. Julián studied architecture in Costa Rica at Universidad Veritas and later went on to receive a Professional Masters of Architecture Degree from the Rhode Island School of Design, USA. He was an architectural designer with BCHO architects in Seoul, Korea. He is licensed to practice in Costa Rica and Colombia. As well as being the founder of atelier | julian uribe, he is also an architectural designer at 3sixØ and Friedrich St.Florian Architects, in Providence, Rhode Island.
Julián has taught at Universidad Veritas in Costa Rica and has been a guest critic at The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), USA and Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), USA. His work has been exhibited at Casa de las Américas (Spain), Ewha-dong Village festival (Korea), CFIA (Costa Rica), Centro Cultural La Antigua Aduana (Costa Rica), Providence City Hall and the Rhode Island Convention Center (Rhode Island, USA).
His work and interests encompass various scales and disciplines, exploring space and perception through the phenomenon of light, embodied tools, fabrication and construction methods, recycling and reusing, and a broad sense of sustainability (social/cultural/physical). Interdisciplinary studio
I think of the architect as a craftsman who shapes the world and its necessities. A craftsman learns about his materials through hands-on process where the making yields knowledge. The architect’s craft and design must emerge from this understanding of the material’s properties and character; giving special attention to how diverse elements interact, are constructed and fabricated.
My skills move through a wide range of disciplines and crafts, which complement and influence one another: pottery, wood, concrete, stone, earth, water and light are thoughtfully considered in their relationship to people, place and time.
As humans, our most crucial skills are learned as an automatic reaction that we are not consciously aware of rather than understood and remembered intellectually. Our tools are essential to our experience. To embody the tool means to internalize the nature of the material, eventually turning oneself, by ritual, into our own product.
I believe in architecture and design as a tool for people. It is in the world and for the world. We are responsible for the inclusion of humanistic values, responding with a sense of obligation towards humanitarian concerns. Our life is our work and our work is our voice.

The DOF workshop aims to reconnect architecture back to real-life processes, it aims to reconnect with materiality, with tools and with both local and global techniques. We seek to empower design by informing its process through diverse conceptual and digital resources, thus obtaining results of greater depth, effectiveness and efficiency. Here, technology is understood not as the end, but as the means to achieve an architecture that performs optimally. The confrontation of new design tools of amazing capabilities, with a structured and coherent conceptual method, enables us to respond to problems objectively and accurately. The purpose of the course is to harness the technology inherent to these tools to address immediate contextual specific needs with close control, urging an integral response within a deeper underlying structure of polarity: expression vs. technology.
This is a space for exchanging ideas and opinions, a place for critical interaction. But above all, it is a space for discussion and the construction of knowledge.

RISD’s Master of Architecture program is one of the few in the US embedded in a college of art and design. Here, architecture is taught in a way that understands the practice of design and making as a thoughtful, reflective process that both engenders and draws from social, political, material, technological and cultural agendas. The program aims to empower students to exercise their creativity by understanding their role as cultural creators and equipping them to succeed in the client-based practice of architecture.
