FLYTTBLOCK

Theme for the workshop by Raumlabour Berlin was “Processing the city: strategies for reclaiming public space”. We were asked to invent a tool for organizing events and setting up discussions right in the city streets. We chose to criticize a large local developer. They had plans to build a new Cultural House placing shopping and commercial culture under one roof. It was designed to partly occupy public riverfront, a popular place for strolls. Moreover, the construction of it began with the demolition of an old brick house.

What is culture? How “cultural” Cultural House is?

Objects we built had multiple functions. They could work as canopies, an amphitheatre, platforms, stairs, towers, and a caravan. The name Flyttblock (a bowlder) is the association with huge rocks from Ice Age present at large in Sweden. Literal translation of the word is “moving rock”. Our tool was a reaction to an imported culture fenomenon. Lately we organized 5 events using Flyttblock.
