As One: Multi-Generation Housing

At the core of this multi-generation living space is the concept of harmony and balance. My goal is to create a design that promotes co-living while allowing each generation to maintain their individuality and privacy.

This is an adaptive reuse project of an existing RISD studio building located on Benefit St in Providence, Rhode Island.

The design incorporates a modern and flexible layout that adapts to the changing needs of the occupants. The central space features an atrium staircase with a skylight. Additionally, there are distinct zones for different activities, including a children’s and adults’ library, a shared lounge area, gyms, and private spaces for each generation.

I wanted to prioritize comfort and functionality, using a range of natural materials and earthy colors to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Each family living space includes three bedrooms, bathrooms, a living room, dining room, and kitchen to allow three generational families to live together comfortably. To provide privacy and autonomy, I introduced movable partitions and sliding doors that enable occupants to adapt the space to their specific requirements.
