Howard University has selected Moody Nolan and the Washington DC-based KGD Architecture to design the next piece in its ongoing $785 million campus revitalization.
According to a press announcement by Moody Nolan, once completed, the new Center for Fine Arts & Communications will contain the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, Cathy Hughes School of Communications, and house the University's television and radio stations (WHUR/WHUT.) The new fine arts center was named after the late actor and class of 2000 graduate last year in recognition of his dedication to preserving and fostering arts education at the University.
"For the KGD | Moody Nolan team, this represents a transcendent design opportunity," shared Howard alum, Moody Nolan Partner, and the project's design executive Renauld Deandre Mitchell. "The Center for Fine Arts and Communications will endure as a threshold building for the campus and catalyze a new era of innovation and creative expression for future Bison."
The center is one of the first new constructions on campus since 1984. The project will help orient the northern edge of campus to the cluster of public spaces which surround the extant Childers Hall. To date, Moody Nolan has completed a total of 68 HBCU projects across 33 campuses nationwide.
"I am humbled by the opportunity to give back to a place that has given me so much,” Mitchell added finally. "Here at Howard, I found myself, met my life partner and learned my craft – which I now have the privilege of applying 'With Excellence in Truth and Service' to my alma mater. I’ve come full circle and can now truly say – I’m HOME."
The University is in the process of a historic transformation that also includes a new STEM research center from Perkins&Will and an additional health sciences complex that is expected to name an architect soon.
The firm is said to expect completion of the project in time for the 2025 Fall semester.
