Southmead Hospital is a 430million GBP National Health Service building situated in Bristol, UK. I was the lead building performance specialist for Environmental Design Solutions Ltd. who were hired by DSSR (Sustainable engineering consultants). for our consulting services on the project. The analysis entailed; evaluating the natural ventilation strategy and thermal comfort for the 800 individual patient rooms, under floor heating / cooling in the three large atrium spaces, the natural ventilation strategy of the three atrium spaces, including thermal and CFD simulation. Designing summer and winter strategies for the heating and cooling systems. I also performed whole building simulation to calculate the total consumed energy (in GJ/100m3 to meet NHS trust guides) and a code based building performance model for the as designed UK building regulations. The building was later named the Brunel building, after Bristol based Engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
