Located on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, California, the design for Milo & Olive required merging two seemingly disparate food concepts—an artisanal wood-fired pizza restaurant and a high-quality bread bakery—into one cohesive space. Dual-purpose designs such as flexible shelving, which allows for both product display and storage, and the entry ramp, which doubles as bench seating for bakery and dining customers, maximize both the budget and the spatial efficiency. A singular floating brow element directs natural light from the skylights to the countertop displays below, simultaneously highlighting the product while also concealing the kitchen ceiling. The multi-function kitchen layout, coordinated in collaboration with the owners and operators of both enterprises, fully responds to the daily back-of-house needs of both bakery and restaurant, while the front-of-house experience negotiates between casual cafe, market space, and ambient dining destination.
