B3ta, yes. As far as I know, the printed doc went bye bye several years ago when they revamped their website. It's a pain to learn the search functions but it has everything there and it is updated constantly. You can also do reverse searches by using a specific product to find applicable assemblies.
Ahip, many of the assemblies in the old printed ULC docs have changed numbers or don't exist anymore. We've also ran into issues where one assembly in the book was good, but the testing expired so they pulled the material from their website. Office policy now is to only use assembly sheets directly from ULC website but that's too much work for some which only adds work for me when I need to dig out my cape and save the day.

I wonder if it would be beneficial to add a note to the create-a-login process that this isn't a place to crowdsource project design for free. There seems to be an expectation that genpop just needs to reach into the online architectural collective to get the best ideas/advice.
I'd also suggest that it's not the end of the world to actually comment on someone's project. I don't think it's a liability thing in any way, shape or form.
Perhaps the less acerbic way to respond would be to say that the poster is asking a far larger question that anyone is able to properly respond to online & suggest they go see a local professional. And that by preempting a design pro's work with a half-baked starter plan is likely to tie the pro's hands more than make the project easier.

Not really. If the person you're speaking with knows you're an architect and you know that they know you can be held liable for any 'instruments of service' that you provide them. I'll look at maps and hike into a few new areas to try and find signs that indicate elk could be there in September. I have to still be aware of where I walk, my scent, the wind direction, not being seen, and not making too much noise though. It's basically hunting but without my bow.
Elk are big animals that move a lot. If I spook them during my scouting they will be 'scared' off the area for several months.

I’m guessing the preference is outdoors due to required clearances around the charger and the fact that different vehicles have different locations for charging ports. Indoors you’re sort of stuck installing it midway on a side wall if you want flexibility.

it is a sentiment not unheard of in economic media.
The economy as it is set up right now benefits the incumbent more than anyone else, to an astonishing degree. Meaning the only way for young people to make headway is for the whole thing to fall down enough to create the possibility of home ownership or to buy stock, or whatever. Right now, the only ones who benefit from high stock prices are those who are earning rent from it.
On the other hand, much of the world seems to have avoided building enough housing for the population that wants it, so its hard to say that an imploding economy will change much on that front. Even if it wouldnt, the feeling that something has to give is probably one of the biggest motivators in politics in the last few years. It explains a lot of the extreme views on all sides.

Aug 9, 24 12:07 pm
Rad Power Bikes are the most well known because of their marketing and cheaper price tag, but it comes at the cost of some quality in my experience (my wife has a Rad City). Brakes could be better, quality control could be better, motor can be better, etc.
I'd recommend looking into offerings from Tern if you can. I've seen really good things about them and their Bosch motors are probably the best in the industry. I don't have a Tern myself, but if I were to get an e-bike of this style for commuting, I would probably go with one of theirs ... likely the GSD (i.e. Get Shit Done). (I do have a box bike style e-bike with a Bosch motor system ... Urban Arrow Family)
All that being said, if you do end up going with Rad Power Bike, look very seriously at upgrading the mechanical disc brakes to hydraulic disc brakes. I do think they have a few options for bikes with hydraulic disc brakes from the factory now too, or you might find a bike shop that can upgrade them for you (though I have heard some shops won't even let Rad Power Bikes in the door due to insurance and liability issues).
Chad Miller

That said, riding an e-bike is a lot of fun, and totally practical when going to work so one is not all sweaty and stinky.

I hear ya. My largest local city has by far the most complicated permitting process around, but I have learned that if something isn't clear in their zoning ordinance, I need to contact that department because they almost always have a supplemental document explaining those specific details. Why they don't just add them to the ordinance I don't understand.

Sometimes you need to be told "get it done/ figure it out" as a young architect you discover that 1. you are more resourceful than you thought and 2. you will always have to train and motivate yourself in this profession, in some way.
The gentle hands-on coaching is good too, but too much of that is a bad thing. As long as you don't do it in a toxic way (like the above example) I think it is not only fine, but important. Maybe this is path "C".

And we wonder why the profession is dying.

we have come to understand that a part of job with training is to explain enough to start and to iterate until its what we need. It takes more time than a pro would need, but we are moving forward and that is the point. We build the extra time into our planning if a young intern is working with us. Not a problem.
It took us some time to learn this process. When I was working for others it was about the same, with lots of friendly cajoling for being doing bad work. It was never toxic and I have to say my first office was amazing at teaching. That was in Japan though, where graduates are not expected to know anything at all. Backpacked in five miles. I didn't see any elk but saw a lot of sign (scat, scrapes, eaten plants). I was in heavy brush and called in two elk but they never got close enough for me to see.

I count at least 19 employees featured on their website ... who wants to make a report to the California Labor Commissioner's Office?
"As of January 1, 2023, an employer with 15 or more employees must include the pay scale for a position in any job posting. If an employer with 15 or more employees engages a third party to announce, post, publish, or otherwise make known a job posting it must provide the pay scale to the third party and the third party must include it within the job posting.
The Labor Commissioner interprets this to mean that the pay scale must be included within the job posting if the position may ever be filled in California, either in-person or remotely."
I think Archinect should inform them and if TW doesn't change their post it should be removed.
Everyday Architect
Sep 12, 24 11:54 am
No, that's not Archinect's job.
TWA has a responsibility to comply with the law. If they don't the recourse is for someone aggrieved by the violation to make a report to the Labor Commissioner's office. Archinect has no standing.
"35. Where and when can a person file a claim if they were aggrieved by a violation of Labor Code Section 432.3?
The person may file a complaint with the Labor Commissioner’s Office, the state agency charged with enforcement. A written complaint must be filed within one year after the date the person learned of the violation.
A person may also bring a civil action for injunctive relief and any other relief that the court deems appropriate."
Here are the first 2 paragraphs of my blog post I linked above as a refresher:
I'm seeing complaints coming up in the forums as jurisdictions are implementing salary transparency laws and companies posting jobs on Archinect are allegedly not immediately following legal requirements to disclose salary ranges on those postings. These complaints seem to focus on Archinect not doing enough to enforce these laws on the job posts they publish. I get it, Archinect could hold a lot of power here to refuse to post jobs where the posting is not written to comply with these laws, but it's not their responsibility or their job.
I think the target of the complaint is misplaced when we focus on Archinect and not the company who is actually required to comply with the law (don't shoot the messenger etc.). I'm not trying to say Archinect can't do more, but I'm saying if you want to make an effort to fix these posts, you should first be going to the companies, and/or the authorities that enforce these laws.
Everyday Architect
Sep 12, 24 12:02 pm
Of course, anyone can email the address included in the job posting to remind TWA of their responsibility to follow the law as well.
In my experience when I get head hunted and they don't include the salary range, I've been able to direct them to the state agency's website and inform them of the law and they come back with the range. YMMV

Sep 12, 24 12:12 pm
Yes. EA is right. It's not the platform's responsibility to make sure that postings conform with local laws and regulations. That's on whoever is making the postings. If TWA is breaking the rules, then that's between TWA and whomever is responsible for enforcing those rules in TWA's jurisdiction.

Archinect put their money in the bank when they got paid to post the job. That's all they need to do with their money.
Archinect's mouth, if I recall correctly, is in the camp of they alert the poster of the potential that their posting might not be fulfilling the laws when they can, and they've contemplated making all postings have salary range (but have obviously not implemented a policy for that).
I understand it's not Archinect's responsibility however I'd think if they actually supported the salary laws they would at least look into postings that people have reported for not following said law.
Everyday Architect
Sep 12, 24 2:12 pm
Who's offering to pay Archinect to look into those postings and provide legal counsel to the companies advertising jobs on their site? The advertisers certainly aren't.
I really don't know how many times (or ways) it can be said that it is not Archinect's responsibility to do any of that. The fact that they even point out to advertisers that they might be violating laws (as they stated in that post in Jan. '23) is above and beyond their standard of care.
Would you expect a newspaper's classified ad desk to research the laws surrounding everything anyone wanted to post there to verify it met any and all legal requirements that might apply? Does Craiglist do that? Facebook Marketplace? Do you think Indeed or other large job posting sites do? How much will you send me if I can find a potentially law violating post from an architecture firm on some other job site?

Well the firm is really really horrible in terms of design, so my part-time design-only contributions are quite valuable to them. I imagine you aren't going to find a similar position anywhere that already does quality work.
Most small firms I've ever worked with/ interviewed with/ talked with are tightly controlled by the founder so there just isn't much room for this kind of schematic-only design. Most established corporate firms have very set ways to matriculate into design director roles, and even then, it is often the prinicpals bringing in work setting the design direction.

I really like your images of it
, sameold
Thanks!
Love the photos, love the building, both unsettle me in a good way.
Is it... occupied?
Did not look occupied
What did it look like before the explosion?
The swoopy things look terrible. It’s like some weird wish dot com off brand of the beijing bird’s nest.
Isn’t this an office building too? Imagine trying to lease this thing out when there is zero consistency floor to floor.
I also hear that most of buildings in the Hayden tract have a ton of issues.
Great images, SOD. The black and white choice is perfect.
And as strange as this thing is, the more conventional, huge mixed-use thing across the street to the north
is not much better.
Freaking out in a good way - just signed a lease for my first office space after going out on my own in May last year. Not bad for only a year!
big step! congrats! good work begets good work!
Did UL get rid of their printed Fire Resistance directories and I just not know about it? I've been using the online version, I'm not a fan, and previously it was support staff that was responsible for ordering our code and reference materials. How and where do you get yours?
I have an older refence book. I find the assembly I want in the book and then I look it up on the website for the updated information and current CAN/ULC.
The printed version is so much better than the website.
Thanks non.
ns -I just use my book as a starting point, but always use up to date information from the website
I use USGs website then use it to read the ul.
I spent yesterday designing a screen porch addition to my house in Sketch Up. I have at least 25 things that I should have prioritized over dicking around in SU for 6 hours, but I just couldn't help myself.
Is this COVID brain? Perimenopause? ADHD? Depression? I can't seem to do the things I really *should* be doing, but I can easily lose myself in what I *want* to be doing.
Anyway, thank goodness for the rain this morning. These heat domes suck and definitely contribute to my mood.
I think I have at least 278 versions of my unfinished house renovations, in sketch
Oops. ...in sketchup format from over the years. Today I'm stripping paint and while it's somewhat sorta satisfying, it's really slow work that will never actually be appreciated. Ugh.
I’m finally moving forward with a personal project I started in sketchup 15 years ago. Currently interviewing GCs. A lot of money but will be a huge quality of life improvement.
I find that "nesting" can be a calming activity. I'm always designing additions and changes to our house, and occasionally actually build some of the projects.
I rebuilt a flagstone walk and am fixing to fix cracks in the drywall and a few other fun things around the house.
I started a thread about shitty developer townhomes.
See you Monday, new office space.
I'm alone in the office today because we are allowed to WFH 3 days a week but frankly I really prefer separating work and life at least a little. Congratulations Josh!
It's surreal working in a place that isn't my living room.
Yaaaaaaay!
Congrats Josh. Stared at the spelling of "Studio" for like a minute just now being like "that doesn't look right at all!" Learning these other languages has really fucked up my English.
Dang AA, how many languages can you read?
French: studio
German: studio
Italian: studio
Spanish: estudio
@WG I didn't say it made any sense.
Oh I see. It is funny when a word we know well all of a sudden doesn't look right anymore.
I think AA is listening to too much Phil Collins, Sussudio on the brain.
@Chad - you learn one latin romance language to a high level and you can basically read the others. Except Romanian. Crazy fuckers they are.
romanian sounds very italian, but it's not!
I saw this and thought of our Canadian pals here on TC.
Well Donna, when a Canadian really likes another Canadian they go out in their driveway and . . .
...smack? LOL
Is that what Canadians call it? ;)
Hockey pucks.
As a northern MN native, aka Southern Canada, I know it's hocky pucks. I was just trying to be cute with the Canadians (aka, The Great White North).
There's about 10 architecture firms within a few minutes of my office. Every summer we have a two-day street hockey tournament in the back alley. This year, the cops dropped the first puck and we all celebrated with beers after. True story.
I thought "...shoot their shot" would be Chad's punchline
taz - I'm so disappointed in myself for not thinking of that.
That’s some bad grouping. Def not NHL caliber prospects.
You only drank beers after? soft
They drank light beers during the game. It's just that us northern folks call that water.
Sitting on my front porch, drinking wine, gently catching and marveling at fireflies, and aggressively smashing mosquitoes.
Nice. I raced lobsters yesterday in Nova Scotia.
Raced them against each other, or raced against them yourself?
We have more fireflies this year than any of the previous 10 years here. Maybe because the spring wasn't a drought or flood for a change, and/or because instead of mowing our cleared 2+ acres, I mowed pathways and let the grass and wildflowers grow.
We have lobster boat races here in Maine but I've never seen a lobster race, or a lobster/Canadian race...
The lobsters moved backwards, so the race was boring. I ate 2 of them afterwards.
@chad miller i scolded logon for you. I'm embracing my crotchety old lady position in life.
Thanks Donna. I think logon is just having some 'issues' and attempted to make himself feel better by attempting to troll. Unfortunately he didn't do a good job and his ego can't take it.
Fire inspector tells owner they need to spray fire proof steel, and their 1953 school building needs to meet 2018 building code. When I ask under what authority does the schools corridor walls need to meet the current codes, when the doors and casework through said corridor walls don’t meet current codes, I am told that they won’t be bullied. I’m just asking questions so I can explain why the school needs to allocate 2 million dollars to the school board for future repairs, and why my other clients in the same state need to plan for future contingencies that they were not also aware needed to be met.
Are they doing other work or is this from a routine fire inspection? Fire marshals remind me of the supreme court--there is nobody above them to check their authority.
Jokes on them when I burn the school to the ground. Anyone seen my red stapler?
But where is the fun in that?
true, but
i just don't want the world to think we're a bunch of grumpy assholes
Hey, I take exception at the grumpy label.
I think the people that come here for free crowdsourced design are either clueless about what it takes to do what they're asking or they are aware and are despicable people. Either way, telling them the infeasibility / error in what they're asking is not going to produce positive results. Either they won't understand and think we're being 'mean' or they think we owe them something and we're being 'mean'.
But we're the experts. What more do you want, money? I thought you were doing this for the love of Architecture?
Apparently we have doctors turning to M.archs to pass the time now... strange world.
I have provided meaningful input and even done some sketches for these people in the past. Usually it results in them coming back and arguing with me/ us. Just simply not worth it in terms of time or enjoyment.
Giving free advice online could have potential legal consequences for licensed architects.
via avatar? across state/country lines? cuz we stamped something? because we cited our E&O policy in our signature? cuz we directed GC action in the field? I'm just not seeing it...meh. Free online advice is worth about what it costs -- buyer beware.
Not really. If the person you're speaking with knows you're an architect and you know that they know you can be held liable for any 'instruments of service' that you provide them. This can be bar napkin sketches in certain situations. I know this because a firm I used to work with was held liable for a sketch on of our architects did on a napkin during a church picnic.
I have to guess that wasn't the only info in rendering that decision. Comparing it to here is strained at best. If that example is compelling to you, I'd advise that public forums are a poor avenue for instruments of service. ;)
I don't know how modern courts view it. It's also why I don't provide architectural advice here unless I state it's only and idea and I'm not sure it will work.
i am still alive.
it's a start
I've listened to this slow jam five times already.

Oh boy. So many inappropriate jokes . . . .
Well it's elk scouting weekend. I'm hoping to find a few remote backpack in locations I can bow hunt over the month of September.
Ground elk burgers are the best.
I know. That's why I spend every weekend in September walking ten miles a day in the mountains.
Are there also sky elks or water elks?
Just mountain elks in my area. ;)
In my opinion, they taste the best.
Chad - is this literally just walking through the area's to find the best locations for when the season opens?
Bench - pretty much.
In the meantime, I saw 4* bull elk hanging out on someone's lawn while riding my bicycle on Saturday.
*I'm pretty sure it was 4, but I didn't stop to look more closely and unfortunately my GoPro footage only shows some of them as just brown colored spots with how wide the shot was and how far away they were.
I think 3 of them are shown here, the one with the arrow pointing to it was standing up, I think there are 2 more laying down just slightly to the foreground of the one standing, but they sort of blend in with the tips of the taller grasses in the foreground.
I see a lot of elk in national parks and on wildlife preserves. Also when I'm backpacking outside of hunting season. ;)
Just back from five days out of office and for the first time in awhile I was TRULY out of office. Turned off notifications and everything. Very nice.
So scientist are finding cocaine in sharks around Brazil.
https://www.bbc.com/news/artic...
It's just a matter of time until this . . .
Cocaine Shark
I think we might already have Cocaine Whales here in New England: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDzYStX1oQY
That's it - I'm staying out of the oceans.
OK, I don’t know if it’s because I had a massage yesterday that released a looooong time of tension or if it’s because I also forgot to take my antidepressant yesterday or if it’s the hope brought out in the open by Kamala Harris, but I’m reading the Olympics coverage this morning and I just keep crying. Humans are so wonderful, I wish we could all be more wonderful to each other. No more refugees, no more hunger, no more cruelty - it IS possible.
This is where I’m reading: https://apnews.com/live/olympics-opening-ceremony-2024-updates
We got new sit / stand desks in the office! Sweet!
As a person w/ back issues, I cannot recommend this enough. Just moving 3-4 more times a day to standing keeps me from settling into a crappy posture.
Why do i see so many home ev chargers installed outside? My expectation is that it’d be more secure & protected in a garage…I feel like I see them everywhere. Maybe it’s Portland? Or, am I just noticing them because they are outside?
What are your clients choosing: indoor or outdoor install?
What if you don't have a garage? I don't and neither do most of the other houses in my 1960s hood... But it's an interesting question anyways. I have 2 10mil houses finishing construction and both have their EV charges on outside walls by choice even though their garages can park an armada of vehicles.
I’m guessing the preference is outdoors due to required clearances around the charger and the fact that different vehicles have different locations for charging ports. Indoors you’re sort of stuck installing it midway on a side wall if you want flexibility.
I know a guy who had some sort of EV (not sure they ever found out which one, or if it was one of the "toys" or a car) catch on fire and burn down his whole garage including some sort of custom ferrari. So that's a vote for putting it outside I guess.
They'd never work as performative virtue signaling if they were hidden in garages.
atelier nobody - I thought that's why you drove them around?
Those people whom console themselves with child labour digging up coltan and lithium for electric vehicles in Central Africa or dragging up the sea floor can get back. In my opinion they are clowns.
I somehow confused drums please, Fab? with Jawkneen Music.
I'm sorry about that drums please, Fab?. Please forgive me.
Jawknee is likely barred from posting in TC... and has been dormant for months. We're all grateful
I still feel bad for confusing the two. I have no idea how I did that! I'm seriously considering going to a doctor about this lapse in cognition.
Donna and I hung out in Columbus, Indiana, yesterday (we did not intentionally coordinate outfits)
Archinect gang.
Amazing people and bags!
Don't forget the shoes!
Oh ye, the shows are totally SLAY! (thats what the kids these days say)
My button says WOMEN VOTE.
Why have architectural competitions become so bad? I went and clicked on an email I received from Buildner, sent them my email to download the brief, and the file is corrupt and unreadable.
Do as little work as possible, collect entry fees, profit, repeat.
What are your esteemed favourites for the Stirling prize? For me it is Chowdhury Walk by Al Jawad Pike as I've seen it in real life and it looks like a good place to live. Elizabeth line was an awful experience especially at rush hour. I don't like New Grimshaw's work though so I might be biased.
Congrats on the office space Josh and Vado glad you are still with us!
With Covid & switch to WFH I bought a standing desk (analog not electric) and it was a game-changer for sure. Have to be careful to not lock my knees but have noticed so many benefits to not sitting 40+ hours a week.
Non, did all the lobsters move backwards? Or just the losers/the ones you ate?
Also came across this fun little project recently, based on name was not expecting direction it goes... https://archinect.com/turett/project/h-e-m-p Feels very 90s...?
Wow, that kicks my claustrophobia into high gear! And it looks even less comfortable that economy air travel. The blood would be gone from my legs within a minute or two.
pretty sure this was designed for human trafficking
Reminds me of an escape pod in scifi.
I personally hope this market crash makes 2007-2008 look small. It's the only way I'll ever afford a house. I mean a new van. I mean a new tent. Or just a new refrigerator box.
As a new business owner, I hope otherwise - as much as I do feel you on the only way to ever afford the house sentiment (because same)
I wouldn't wish for a market crash of any type. I don't think a market crash would make homes more obtainable. The prices would go down. Yet so would peoples income when they loose their jobs.
Last housing crash housing prices really didn’t drop in a bunch of metros. Some places prices stayed flat and some places prices went up. If the housing market crashes i think it’s mostly going to be Arizona, Texas, and Florida.
archanon, I can tell by your comment that you clearly have no clue about how the economy works. Maybe you also wish to lose your job when the economy tanks? I didn't think so.
it is a sentiment not unheard of in economic media.
Does anyone here commute on a e-bike and can give me a good recommendation? I think I'm ready to buy one.
https://www.radpowerbikes.com
Do you ride this, betonbrut? What do you like about it?
I have an older RadWagon (purchased at the end of 2019) that I use to cart the kids around town. It has been a solid bike with very little maintenance or issues. I think we have like 800 miles on it. At the time, it was one of the more affordable electric cargo bikes on the market. Overall, it has been a great bike.
Haven't bit the bullet yet, despite Denver + CO's subsidy programs but my sense is that Rad Power seems to be popular among folks who have...
Urban Arrow Family)
https://www.ternbicycles.com/u...
To add onto the insurance / liability part. In my area, if a bike shop doesn't sell an particular brand of e-bike they will not work on it. This is because of insurance and liability.
Y'all have me convinced to buy locally from a very good shop here that my brother in law works at, so I'll check with him and do some test rides. it feels like a pretty significant investment!
Don’t get rad power unless they have a local shop that can service it. That was my first ebike. I put over 4K miles on it. The torque washer broke and the rear hub totally stripped out the dropouts.
Currently riding an aventon because there are about 5 local shops that service it. Pretty solid bike - a lot easier to change out the brake pads than the rad bike. Currently have about 3k miles on it and have been riding it for a little over a year. FYI, Brake pads last around 500-1000 miles depending on how much stop and go you do.
lectric makes decent bikes, but upgrade the brakes.
Us analog road bikers like to make fun of e-bikes non-stop, like these memes.
That said, riding an e-bike is a lot of fun, and totally practical when going to work so one is not all sweaty and stinky.
I've heard great things about the Aventon, but you cant go wrong with a trusted LBS (Local Bike Shop), Donna! Good Luck!
I like to make fun of road bikers of any type. ;)
I adore this woman and her creativity.
The last time I saw academic research applied with this "causal attitude" at an international event....
I think she has insulted every athlete that has trained and qualified to go to the Olympic.
Why don't you let the athletes decide whether or not to be insulted?
Almosthip wrote:
"I think she has insulted every athlete that has trained and qualified to go to the Olympic."
I said "I think" so yes that would make it my opinion
I know. The meme still stands, man. ;)
Did she just qualify cuz she was Australian? If she was from another country that does not win as many medals, would she qualify? questions, questions...
'Yall have way too much time on your hands and not enough to occupy your minds
She clearly got 'da metal 'cuz of her cute accent! ;)
Latest rumor is that she (Dr. Rachel Gunn, AKA "RayGun") and her husband set up their own governing body for competitive breakdancing and used it to move her to the qualifiers while excluding competition. She won her qualifier, with her own husband as head Australian coach and a member of the selection panel LMAO.
gwharton - I don't think that's true.

THIS is the only architecture I want to live in from now on:
Welcome aboard!
Ehm.
Access to toilets on all sides. Luxury.
go see how they do it in lake powell, some big rigs floating around there. https://www.lakepowell.com/houseboating/houseboat-comparison-tool/
I'd go for a houseboat, Sleepless in Seattle style. Wasn't Tom Hanks's character an architect in the movie?
Going to need a few more dollars in the bank account apparently https://for-sale.houseboatsofseattle.com/i/seattle-houseboats
Yes, even rents on those houseboats are astronomical. I had researched a while ago...
@Donna - There is a huge houseboating community in Yellowknife (capital of the Canadian Arctic region), its become quite popular over the last couple decades but was originally started by a bunch of hippies way back in the day who wanted to live off grid next to the town.
https://www.uphere.ca/articles...
this whole competitive breaking thing just doesn't seem to have much worldly gravitas/integrity...it just seems to smack of cultural appropriation more than anything (i can't believe i'm saying that -- am i now officially old? i don't even have a lawn)
parcours would have been far less cringey, or pro tag
officially old for commenting in the wrong convo? (this is about houseboats)
dang! and no edit anymore...just permanently inscribed that i'm a moron...
ouch!
lol proto. you might be getting old.
But you're not alone. Was just reading about a project that is expected to open in 2027, and I had to blink because I still remember when the year 2000 seemed such a long way off.
FWIW plenty of break-dancers are cool with the awful performance of Ray Gun. Cuz they follow the punk ethos. Individuality over quality and skill. Not that it isnt weird as hell to watch.
More fun to watch the Japanese gold medalist. She is on the TV here with all the other Japanese medalists sharing stories about their olympic experience. Also seems to follow her own drum.

It's two weeks until bow hunting elk begins in my area. If anyone wants some elk meat get in line now.
Disclaimer: This in no way guarantees that I will get an elk. I am after all trying to hunt a 650 pound animal with a sharpened stick and I kind of suck at it. ;)
https://www.google.com/search?...
did you shoot my cow? Ahahahahahahaaha, now I have to watch this....
Wait, that wasn't an elk? My bad.
Chad, if you're serious, I would love some elk meat!
I'm serious. If I get an elk I'll have around 200 pounds of meat. My wife and I can't eat all of it before it get's freezer burn.
I’ve only eaten elk sausage, but I liked it. I’m trying not to eat much meat anymore, but respect people who kill and eat their own food.
I try to kill my own food. Some years I get most of my meat from what I've killed / caught. Others, not so much.
My in-laws are retired ranchers (not the wealthy type) and we buy most of our beef from their 'hobby herd' of 12-15 cows.
I still find it impressive that 70+ year old couple thinks of 12-15 cows as a hobby and not real work. ;)
I need to vent a little against an AHJ pulling new rules out of their asses every time we submit for a permit - not published, not communicated to anyone - they just wait for the submittal to ask for stuff that could have been done in advance but nobody knew.
I hear ya. My largest local city has by far the most complicated permitting process around, but I have learned that if something isn't clear in their zoning ordinance, I need to contact that department because they almost always have a supplemental document explaining those specific details. Why they don't just add them to the ordinance I don't understand.
you're lucky they have a document, this is all coming only from their thoughts and never put into paper. They're asking for civil, mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings for a single family residential - it's a first for me after practicing here for 18 years, my boss is 36 years into it and never saw it either.
Yeah my local city requires those too, just diagrammatic but still annoying. If I don't have an ME on board, I use this free tool for mechanical loads and sizing: https://hvac.betterbuiltnw.com/.
I'm not pissed for the ask, I'm pissed they wait until you submit for permit to tell you.
I currently have an AHJ calling for conformance to a particular national standard that is currently withdrawn! It's been 2 years and several projects but it still comes up. Dawg... we can't conform to something that does not exist and neither can the manufacturer. Nearly 100million in construction with this one AHJ in a small municipality.
This is why a lot of architects just submit early and have them tell you what they want. Can't guess what they want anymore. They change what they want every other week.
this particular building dept. changed all the staff in the last 5 years, from director down, all of them are new and come with "fresh" ideas.
Remember, they have one job and that is to issue building permits. They have largely forgotten this.
I find it funny how people get passionate for the tesla cybertrash, what do the esteemed designers in this forum think about it?
https://www.cnn.com/2024/08/29...
Offensively, aggressively, hideously ugly. Also, I've seen a couple of them involved in crashes now, and it's clear they don't have crumple zones. God help you if you get hit by one of these things.
I thought the concept was interesting, but I've seen several on the road now and they just look like poorly done Mad Max cosplay.
Its ugly for sure. But certainly a breath of fresh air compared to other overly curvy and articulated car designs. Kinda like how boxy the volvos back in the day used to be. I like boxy stuff, but the Cybertruck proportions are bad
I thought the cybertruck was a neat idea when first being proposed. An easy to manufacture, economical, electric truck for urban use. That's not what it is however and because of that I don't like it.
You mean the "Incel Dorado?"
If someone on your staff tells you they have no experience with something and you want/need them to do it - would you
A) coach them and provide support and encouragement
B) complain about how they are “too slow,” tell them “come on, this is easy” if they are clearly struggling and asking for help, and then rip them apart if they make a mistake.
Far too much of my experience in this field has been B.
When I have managed people I have enjoyed teaching and coaching them more than I should, from a time-management viewpoint, but I had to learn most things the hard way and want to save them the time and struggle.
Time well spent if you want to retain people.
Little bit of column A, little bit of column B.
If you ever do B, you should be drummed out of the profession, or at least shamed.
Yeah, B is toxic but it can't be all "A".
I always got "They didn't teach you anything in school, did they?" And as they walked away, annoyed, I would respond, "I learned a lot in school but not this. They said I would have to learn a lot on the job." But they were gone by then and I struggled till I figured it out, working long hours and weekends to get it right. And we wonder why the profession is dying.
archanonymous - I don't entirely disagree, but there are right and wrong ways to say something. "I think this is something you can probably work out on your own; do the best you can and then we'll review it together" will have a much different effect than "figure it out, kid, I'm busy."
we have come to understand that a part of job with training is to explain enough to start and to iterate until its what we need.
I didnt know how lucky I was at the time.
A is what I endeavor to do (which occasionally I fall short on due to time constraints). But, even with time constraints never B, even though its far more common in this field
Got out on Monday for the opening day of elk hunting with my recurve bow. Just a short 36 hour trip since I had to work on Tuesday. :(
Backpacked in five miles. I didn't see any elk but saw a lot of sign (scat, scrapes, eaten plants). I was in heavy brush and called in two elk but they never got close enough for me to see.
I did get a grouse so the trip was productive! I also had a very unhappy squirrel throw acorns at me. Little bastard could throw hard. :s
How's the grouse meat? Like turkey?
Sounds like a fun trip anyway!
Our last house had several mature red and white oaks around and over it. I eventually realized that the acorns and acorn/leaf bunches that would fall on me whenever I walked outside weren't random events.
Grouse is kind of like a combination of chicken and turkey. Then again I grill it with a honey and garlic glaze so . . .
I would put grouse halfway between chicken and duck, I think it is much more rich and delicious than a commercially raised turkey. Maybe like a wild turkey.
Sorry, I meant a wild turkey. I got one of those this past weekend as well. ;)
Had to come to Chicagoland again, and stopped by the Chicago architecture Center, nice exhibition, showing almost all new buildings projected for the future, but not a single mention of the Obama presidential library.
I'm really looking forward to retirement. It won't be for another 10 years yet, probably, but I just spent five days in northern Michigan with my husband at his uncle's house and honestly, being able to wake up every day and just do whatever you want to do is waaaaaay underrated! Helps to be in a lovely natural environment with easy access to kayaks, of course.
Off to Chicago this weekend. Sorry it disappointed you, JLC-1!
Not disappointed, just curious. I guess it's more of a real estate show and the sponsors choose what to show. Chicago is great, I wanted to see the spire hole, but related is already pouring foundations. I agree with you on retirement freedom, hoping to get there soon.

hey guys - if you understaff a project and the PA/PM quits halfway through (probably because they weren’t getting the support they needed), does it look really bad if you hire a brand new person to lead the project, throw the former PA under the bus, and ask for more money from the client?
Throwing anyone under the bus makes you look like an ass. Doing so when the person didn't deserve it makes you look like an incompetent ass. Asking the client for more money because you screwed up makes you appear entitled and insane.
suspiciously specific, lol.
Ax, i'd love to know the context of your relationship on this one... genuinely curious.

So how wants to work for Tom Wiscombe?
Odd that no salary range is posted.
https://archinect.com/jobs/ent...
did you look at their website? feels like a video game. And this poem made me laugh "Tom’s work is radical in its treatment of architectural entities like ground, massing, interior, circulation, apertures, and ornament as independent objects within loose, curated collections, rather than as incomplete parts of a unified, singular whole."
What dose that even mean?

Of course, anyone can email the address included in the job posting to remind TWA of their responsibility to follow the law as well.
In my experience when I get head hunted and they don't include the salary range, I've been able to direct them to the state agency's website and inform them of the law and they come back with the range. YMMV
Yes. EA is right. It's not the platform's responsibility to make sure that postings conform with local laws and regulations. That's on whoever is making the postings. If TWA is breaking the rules, then that's between TWA and whomever is responsible for enforcing those rules in TWA's jurisdiction.
That gig reeks of sweatshop from a thousand miles.
The gig reeked of sweatshop from a thousand miles and 2.5 years ago ... https://archinect.com/forum/thread/150304843/how-not-to-be-in-an-office
EA - I'm not saying it's Archinect's legal responsibility to have job posts include required salary ranges. I'm saying Archinect should 'put their money where their mouth is' and remove job postings that are identified as not doing so.
It reeks of sweatshop cuz it IS one
Sent an e-mail to TW.
Archinect put their money in the bank when they got paid to post the job. That's all they need to do with their money.
Archinect's mouth, if I recall correctly, is in the camp of they alert the poster of the potential that their posting might not be fulfilling the laws when they can, and they've contemplated making all postings have salary range (but have obviously not implemented a policy for that).
https://archinect.com/forum/th...
That's too bad.
I understand it's not Archinect's responsibility however I'd think if they actually supported the salary laws they would at least look into postings that people have reported for not following said law.
That makes sense.
OddA... why the screen name change? Someone else got salty and sent word to the office again? Is it to hide from the elks?
Naw - felt bored so I changed it. Also I don't hike from the elk, I call out to them!
On a more pertinent note: I contacted Tom Wiscombe's firm the day I posted this and politely informed them that that they needed to post the pay range. They got back to me and said they would change all their job postings here. Looks like they added it!
Nice!
It was kind of ambiguous when I responded to Archinect job ad, via the insider reference as they are looking for somebody to do “fieldwork.”
Two hours later I was sitting across the guy with green hair on his big head. After some small talk about weather…
- So, what’s this.., umm, fieldwork about?
- Well, it is about busting some architects for false information on their job ads and we just signed a contract with the F..B..I to clean up the swamp!
- Ok. No problem, I bust architects all the time and love to tell them “folks.., you’re busted!” when all of them working on some drawings on their computer screens in their office… Who you want me to bust first?
- We’re waiting for our accounting dept. to let us know who. Although we’d like to start with some minor-starchitect types.
- Okidoki. Btw, what’s the pay? I heard FBI is pretty generous when it comes to making the world a mo-better place you know what I mean?
- Do I know......! You can be sure it’ll get you a better crib.
Too late. I already took the position. Sorry bub. BTW - you really need to do a better job covering your internet history. No judgement however you may not want that getting out.
Established small offices are small for a reason. Not all want to be small on purpose.
I feel like there is more to this comment . . .

Duh!

Everyone beats the US in all urban design categories
I thought that was obvious
?
Unless some more comments come in, it's going to suck if you're the one commenter who doesn't get a free ticket to the Beaux Arts Ball. Still some time to leave a comment and win. https://archinect.com/news/art...
I'll be out hunting elk. Sorry.
some days working in revit feels like this:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AbSehcT19u0
After a long dry spell I now have 2+ years of backlog and am turning down work. Now I regret stressing so much and not enjoying the free time. Back to the grindstone.
That's the main reason why I don't ever want to be a managing partner. Finding work is just something I'm not good at.
Repeat work is the key. Getting work is easier for me than completing it through construction which I don't have to do for the new backlog. I suspect I'm unusual in that regard. I'm more interested in concept design and people than in construction.
Good for you, congrats on being busy again? Alas, the capitalist system necessitates us being busy or worried all the time. No middle ground.
I'm like you Wilma - I really enjoy conceptual design and working with people. I'm good with people and quite 'personable'. If I could just do conceptual and SD I'd love that. In fact, that's what I did for the first eight years of my career.
Maybe I can do conceptual design only. Why not? That's what a lot of unlicensed designers do. Low risk, limited scope, what's not to love. I think knowing all the technical construction stuff makes for better concept design so would still need to keep sharp which might be a challenge.
I agree. If I could find a conceptual designer career I'd take it in a heartbeat.
I would absolutely go back to architecture full time if I could just do programming and schematics then hand off to someone else. That’s kind of what I do now, but not really.
I'm currently working part time doing only schematic design. That's the good part. The bad part is the type of firm who is willing to hire someone in that capacity.
Riding the wave for a while though. Going to get a sick new subwoofer for the van out of this at the very least.
archanonymous, care to elaborate?
The drawback I see is what position will I be in years later if all I've been doing is schematics. I'll be out of the loop.
archanonymous, I would also like to know more about what kind of firm would hire someone to do part time schematic work. Also, the subwoofer is for the van you live in down by the river, right?
Well the firm is really really horrible in terms of design, so my part-time design-only contributions are quite valuable to them. I imagine you aren't going to find a similar position anywhere that already does quality work.
Most small firms I've ever worked with/ interviewed with/ talked with are tightly controlled by the founder so there just isn't much room for this kind of schematic-only design. Most established corporate firms have very set ways to matriculate into design director roles, and even then, it is often the prinicpals bringing in work setting the design direction.
And yes, the subwoofer is for the van. The ducks and I are hatching a plan to light up the geese with GWAR at full volume one day.
Be careful! Geese are assholes.
Are you still down south?
@JLC yeah. Or I wasn't for a while, snagged this fully remote part time thing, and now I'm back (shhh don't tell the PDI I'm working remotely)
the massive countrywide hangover this week will cover you up, ;)
This just reminded me that I missed out on GWAR at Riot Fest this year.
I kicked ass and got SO MUCH work done today. Enjoying a hard cider on the front porch now and will finish up season 2 of Kevin Can Fuck Himself later. Congrats on the work, Ms. Wilma, and I hope you’re enjoying a beverage too!
