The proposed pattern of private and living areas is organized around a central courtyard. The courtyard mediates the house’s relationship with the wider landscape by acting as an ‘outdoor room’ surrounded by a series of inhabited spaces, separating it from the agricultural land beyond. The form of the house itself is derived from the traditional farmsteads and various agricultural precedents, reworked to achieve modern open-plan living.
The internal experience is further enriched with the use of full-height openings, flat roof windows, skylights and light tunnels; filling the interiors with natural light, with views out to the rural landscape and inwards across the proposed courtyard.
A strong contextual approach to the building as a whole has been developed, where the use of hand-made bricks pointed with lime mortar of similar shade and dark stained larch timber shutters has been chosen as a consistent building material, to give the proposed house a physical solidity whilst minimizing the visual impact on the wider landscape.
