M.Arch Thesis: Proposal for transforming a vacant railside Wal-Mart in Plymouth MA into transit oriented housing. Program contains 24 single family units and 10 new retail/restaurant spaces along a series of new outdoor boulevards. To maintain the spirit of the original big box format, the store's exterior perimeter and overhead structural joists have been largely left intact. The open floor plan of the store has been subdivided by inserting a series of exterior partition walls to form four new pedestrian scaled outdoor corridors. Double height units are created within these new residential bars by inserting a series of mirrored wet walls, with skylights installed overhead to bring maximum daylight into the new units.
