The fact that Newark is part of the wider metropolitan area of New York and Jersey City, one of our main goals for the Newark Visitor Center was to create a landmark building to strengthen the identity and important role of the city.
As the lot is located between Raymond Boulevard and the future riverfront development, the area should become the inviting piazza connecting the surrounding areas, a central meeting point for Newark's inhabitants and visitors.
By dissolving the three metro areas in one building (showing also the inseparability) we created a spiral shaped visitor center that consists of three overlapping ellipses surrounded by the piazza with the main entrance from Raymond Boulevard. Entering the NVC the central point is the main hall with the information point, shop, bar and exhibition. Following the shape of the three intersecting building parts up to the gallery space on the first floor, the visitor reaches the look-out, terrace and auditorium on the top level of the building.
One of the shapes is equipped with a multimedia LED mesh facade bringing information, color and life of Newark's neighbourhoods to everybody who's passing by.
We did not go that much into detail by designing an invariable park around the building because it should grow with the development surrounding the lot. The „tree benches“ and the „water benches“ can be located in different places resulting from the visitors tracks.
The NVC is the perfect place to start exploring Newark.
