Eric Liftin founded MESH in 1997 as a hybrid architectural practice to design both architectural spaces and web sites, with a focused objective of forging new relationships between people and their environments in the digital age. MESH innovates with new materials, technologies and methodologies to economize without comprising design integrity. The office is known for successfully integrating contemporary materials into old structures and using translucent material to bring luminous light to interior spaces.
Our passion for innovation and invention spans many areas — new composite materials, integrating information technologies, LED lighting, and low-energy, high-performance building. The firm has long been interested in sustainable building, from the C2C house competition in 2004 to working on an earth-shelter house in 2005 to building a house with solar heating in 2010 to the Energy Star condominium building in 2015. Liftin is a LEED AP and a PHI-certified Passive House Consultant.
MESH strives to integrate the interaction of people on a network into architectural experience, bringing electronic media into the design process. We consider digital spaces to be extensions of physical space. People are building offices in their homes to avoid long commutes. Companies are conferring over computer screens. Shopping occurs in a desk chair at midnight. The crossover of architecture and digital technology is leading to new spatial configurations and, in turn, to new kinds of events and modes of dwelling.
At the same time we are deeply conscious of how our spaces shape our experience. Setting the stage for enriching, memorable, satisfying, stimulating experience is our passion. We study closely the dynamics of urban and architectural spaces — how do we discover new things? How do we observe and learn? How do we connect with others? — and this shapes our approach in every project.
