Forte dei Marmi : Processo di Composizione Logico Generativa by Massimiliano Manno

The project of the New Market Hall of Forte dei Marmi aims to be something more than just a market. It wants to become a new attractor able to enrich further the already important number of attractions of Forte. For this reason, the project has developed around a primary element of an organic nature, well inserted in the environment of pine forests and high-impact scenographic: coverage. Below this one, we developed a great public square, partly paved, partly grassy, who wants to become one of the centres of social life. As well as the pines in Piazza Marconi repair public space making it friendly to the social life of adults and children, in the same way, the new wooden cover protects the public space of the market, making it lively and pleasant urging the community to live outside of the market.

From a technological point of view, were placed some conditions, such as rainwater harvesting for the purpose of reuse in loco and the production of electricity capable of supporting the needs required by the building (lighting, power requirements, dynamism of coverage, etc.). You are given the priority to "social" element of the project, for the purposes of integration and acceptance of new construction on the part of the population, an added value that adds to its principal intended use. The market is positioned within a consolidated city, therefore envisaged an underground car park for storage of cars in order to exclude the same along the streets on which overlook the residences, trying to dismiss the source of noise induced by new construction.

The compositional scheme of new general structure is based on four assumptions:
- strong architectural character;
- environmental integration;
- functionality for operators;
- accessibility for users.
These conditions resulted in a compositional research direction of organic fluidity in such a way as to be able to manage the flow of people and things, movements of air for passive behaviour of the building, and to ensure a strong integration with the environment of pine forest characteristic of Forte dei Marmi. It was used a simulation software that generates schemas to lines represented by the electron movements influenced by positive or negative charges placed on a neutral field. If a first approach, the metaphor of the electrons can appear out of context, after a deeper analysis, one realizes how streams generated have a characteristic of organic nature that makes them respectful of the pine forest, and at the same time enables optimal handling spaces and movements. It has opted for a scheme to 6 positive charges, which defines a system of ISO-curves that becomes the project's compositional grid. The reason why you chose to use a parametric approach to design comes from the desire to characterize the area not so much with a pre-set compositional derives from typical characteristics of strong built and no stranger to the kind of function that it should have, but if you opt for a compositional approach varies depending on certain factors that you chose to give priority over others. The market par excellence is a zone of transition, of movement, of streams; for this reason, it is thought that the input to the design might just be derived from these elements: a neutral field, represented by square lacks built, modified and shaped by electrical charges acting around fixed points with structural and load bearing function.

The area of the market is characterized by high pedestrian and bicycle access with the possibility to Park cycles near the pedestrian area. You can go walking and cycling from Via Vittorio Veneto, Via Ponchielli and blood donors. The great fluidity of organization of public space allows access not only to go to the market, but also to cross from one side to the other in a walk through the pine forest. The latter mode of use of space has been designed to ensure maximum attendance in the area in order to create benefit for traders, which increase the liveliness of public space. Accessibility carraia is limited to maximum surface: there is only a small car parking spaces for rolling, while the bulk of the cars is conveyed in big underground parking from only access Via Ponchielli. Access for loading/unloading of the market occurs outside the market time blood donors ' square and from Via Ponchielli. Traders can get up in front of your sales area with small vans can stop, or edges of the area covered with larger vans and moving goods with trans-pallet trucks. From the underground parking, by stairs or elevator, you can arrive directly in the heart of the market under the cover, this is to help users of the area even during the days of rain. The outer ring to the premises is designed to cycle to allow users to get there with the medium most used navigation in town.

The coverage of the market is the heart of the project, whose shape derives from the diagrams of compositional flows adopted as the overall scheme of the project, optimized in order to create a good shelter from the elements underlying space and can make efficient the water collection system capable of accumulating around 25,000 litres in five large tanks underground. The maximum height of 7.50 meters coverage reaches, in compliance with the maximum height allowed in the pine forest of 7.50 meters, and stands as a continuation of the coma of pines. Structure in curved glulam recalls the supple movement of tree branches in order to offer shelter to the underlying market area as a pine forest.

His organic geometry, apparently very complex is reducible to a series of beams to form the "funnel" is designed to convey the meteoric water towards the support points of where the collection tanks. The curtain panels are constructed with ETFE membranes, plastic and elastic material designed to have high corrosion resistance and not sensitive to temperature changes, plucked in a metal frame suitably stiffened by an element that also acts as a gutter for the flow of water to the tanks, mounted on wooden beams. The membrane has a superior film photovoltaics for electricity production, while the lower is screen-printed with a texture that mimics the foliage of pine trees in order to reproduce the effect of shadow that sunlight creates through the canopy of the tree. The ETFE cushions are interconnected by a hydraulic system able to inflate or sgonfiarli, making them responsive to environmental variations: when it's too cold or hot, bed pads swell increased thermal mass and the ability to isolate both in terms of thermal transmittance. It is an open structure, such as a large canopy that covers and repair the large public square dedicated to the market. The public space is fully accessible at all times of the day and it's packed with elements of street furniture, also designed with parametric approach, which makes it cozy. The mobile sales, then the private areas, have been incorporated into commercial areas under the 6 great coverage and each bank has available an area comparable to a real store, which can be used for the display and storage of the goods.

The area is equipped with restrooms for the users, a small dining area and a public office, such as to maintain during the day an active presence for the attraction and the permanence of the population. The volumes have a height of 3 metres and are independent with respect to the great canopy of the market. In this configuration there are:
- 20 spaces for sale,
- 1 public service,
- 1 meeting point (catering),
- 2 blocks dedicated to public baths,
- 1 lot for the vertical link with underground garage.

In total trade area is 780 msq. The above volumes were designed using the same compositional criteria, choosing cover generating lines within the schema of FlowL. The boundary lines of the volumes that are not used for selling spaces outlined the scheme and green areas. Green areas and paths are distinct but in spaces together make up in order to create a unique environment, a guided tour.

The public space is the true protagonist of this indoor market. Everything is designed in such a way as to create a center of attraction lives even outside market hours: the great accessibility, a very scenic, cover a range of commercial areas that lean toward a square blanket, a green area surrounding market square, footpaths and street furniture that make the entire area livable. In order to increase the quality of urban space, you have deleted the vehicular movement within the area, except in small car parking service or emergency. The total area of public area is approximately 3,450 msq, including 2,106 msq green treated and 1,345 msq paved. In the green parts, how about Solothurn, the planting of trees of small size, compatible with the ecosystem of the pine forest, as the Judas tree, and typical Mediterranean shrubs like the Viburnum Tino, Arbutus, or Mastic. The system of urban furniture plays an important role in making public spaces cozy and livable. A view of ecology and environmental protection, the furniture is made with only natural materials:-steel plate structure variable thickness, galvanized and painted dark: the structures of all the furnishings are made of this material, that has been chosen considering the increased mechanical strength and resistance to weathering and vandalism attacks. -Planks of recycled polymers in extrusion and recycled wood fibers (type of neo Color sand of Santa & Cole): it is basically an artificial wood, chosen because faced with a look of absolute naturalness, it is a material with excellent mechanical qualities and resistance to vandalism, which does not require any maintenance by the administration. Also, being a material produced entirely from recycled materials, and that in turn is recyclable, has a strong ecological character.
