Since the beginning of our times, humans have developed the necessity for sharing information. This necessity, inspired us on creating multiple techniques and ways of representation. From cave paintings, to the use of pigeons as message carriers, to the invention of paper, and even to the creation of light, humankind have shown its capacity of adapting to new technologies and discoveries.[1]Human kind have shown through several decades our capacity of adjusting to new findings and opportunities.
In today’s society, smart phones are an important tool for inquiry, for seeking answers, finding information, or even stay on touch. This increase in use is due to peoples’ constant thirst for knowledge, opportunities and connectivity with people around the globe, and is facilitated because of the practicality and connectivityof smart phones. The constant use of this device has several impacts on human development, as the Royal Society for Public Health[2]states in a recent study on young people’s mental health and well-being. This has produced levels of addiction in different users, affecting their memory, creating more distractions and generating higher levels of anxiety and depression[3]. With the creation of Social media, a new style of communication was developed, revolutionizing the way we interconnect.
In this case, Instagram is not only affecting how we interact with others, but also how we experience and enjoy physical space. Now, picture-taking and instant sharing has never been easier and practical to interact with. Constant sharing pictures worldwide has started to shape how we encounter design and space. Due to this, interior design has been changing and adapting; everything is about broadcasting a person’s experience of space, about curating the images you take in a specific place.
As future interior designer, should we subscribe to this virtual movement or change it. Considering the current importance of social media and its effects, how can we start developing new spaces to encourage experiences that transcend the one-dimensional act ofposting a picture, and how can we provide spaces where authenticity, creativity and creating are stimulated? How can we provide new opportunities of discovering new moments?
