Hand appliqué panels for Guerlain, flag shop in Paris with Peter Marino Architects

Maki has collaborated on several occasions with the industry’s top firm, Peter Marino Architects creating pieces for both fashion retail and high-end residential spaces.

This notable piece is a 16-panel fabric “painted” wall installation for Guerlain Paris flagship store.  At first glance these walls of classic wainscoting panels appear to be hand painted using bold brush strokes. As one gets closer however, the brush strokes begin to have another dimension. It is because they are not painted – rather the strokes are fabrics cut and hand sewn on to a base panel. Maki describes the creation process at her studio in NYC, “Cutting fabrics was very important because each shape needed to have the qualities of a hand-painted stroke with a gradual thickness, shadows and highlights like an oil painting. It was really an interesting creation process.”
