About

MAKI YAMAMOTO TEXTILE STUDIO

I am a fine artist and contemporary textile couturier applying dressmaker details to artfully embellish specially selected textiles, as only hand-painting, handcrafted stitching, pleating, contemporary embroidery and more can do.

My international textile atelier fashions one-of-a-kind couture cloth creations. I highlight the vision of interior designers, architects, event planners, theatrical designers, as well as fashion designers and vanguard visual display.

Design commissions are infused with handcrafted dimensional detail for private residences, commercial, hospitality and international projects to reflect clients’ design schemes, individual style or brand identity. Gallery, museum and private collector commissions are accepted for uniquely created installation textile art.

MAKI YAMAMOTO

Born and raised in Tokyo, Maki found inspiration in the exotic handcrafted arts of Japan leading to her Sophisticated affinity for the intricate beauty of couture.

She studied fashion design at Tokyo’s renowned Bunka Fashion College in the footsteps of an earlier graduate, Yoji Yamamoto (no relation.) Issey Miyake recognized Maki’s craftsmanship and avant-garde imagination when he twice selected her for the highest merit fashion prize in Bunka’s prestigious, nomination-only design competition ( SO-EN fashion prize ).

Japanese culture and an upbringing immersed in art and music from a very young age led to painting, drawing and classical piano from age six, but it was textiles that took her passion, proficiency and modern approach to fashion design.

Upon moving to New York City, Maki studied printmaking at the National Academy School of Fine Arts. In 2003, she merged her work as an artist and fashion designer with her savvy devotion to textiles to launch her eponymous brand, Maki Yamamoto Textiles.
